perfectionism

Is Perfectionism Your Greatest Enemy?

You may think that you will never accomplish anything in life unless you master every single skill in your profession, achieve exceptional results in every project you do, and develop amazing social and presentation skills as well.

While most people understand that it’s impossible to consistently accomplish all of these things, there are those who actually expect such perfection of themselves, as well as of their coworkers, friends, and family.

While setting high standards for yourself helps you to stay motivated and determined while working towards your goals and dreams, taking this to extremes can lead to disastrous consequences.

When Does Perfectionism Become a Problem?

Perfectionism becomes a problem when it starts to affect the quality of your work and, possibly, your life.

While you should have high standards and  create quality products and services, perfectionism often leads to  stress, fatigue, and a feeling that nothing is ever good enough.

In the workplace, this perfectionism can translate into missed deadlines, lower productivity, and an inability to complete even simple tasks on time.

Perfectionism also affects other aspects of your life:

  • Inability to maintain relationships due to excessively high standards
  • Feelings of restlessness
  • Low sleep quality
  • Feeling inadequate
  • Excessive dieting
  • Intolerance

Difficulty knowing where to draw the line between possibilities and reality is also characteristic of extreme perfectionism.

Endless Cycle of Misery

Perfectionists often feel dissatisfied, regardless of whether or not a task has been completed successfully.

This makes it virtually impossible for them to actually enjoy their lives, no matter how much money or awards they get.

Strive for Excellence, not Perfection

A healthier alternative to perfectionism is to aim for excellence.

Doing your best, without any unrealistic demands, makes it easier for you to accept it when your efforts don’t generate the results you expected.

When you strive for excellence, you accept that at times you will have to settle for less than you wanted.

Even the best athletes fail to win most of the games they play. They are consistently good, not perfect.

Remember that you can be successful in life without being the best at everything you try. Being consistently above average will allow you to reach most of your goals without making extreme sacrifices.

Don’t Fall into The Perfectionism Trap!

Do not let perfectionism rule your life.  Use its positive aspects as a motivator that pushes you to perform better – without becoming obsessed about the results!

Hypnosis: An Effective Way to Overcome Perfectionism

Since perfectionism often starts at a young age, it tends to be deeply ingrained in the subconscious mind. This makes it difficult to overcome through conventional therapy.

Hypnosis has helped many people overcome their challenges with perfectionism. Directly targeting the subconscious mind allows hypnosis practitioners to help their clients break harmful thinking patterns much faster than through other methods.

Hypnosis makes use of proven techniques, such as confusion, that distract clients’ attentions, and allow hypnotherapists to communicate with the subconscious mind.

A good way to think of the subconscious mind, is to see it as the mind of a small child. A small child usually believes what authority figures tell them. This makes it a lot easier to persuade children to change their minds.
